Roofing
Roofing on Long Island has to be specified for wind first and looks second, though we make sure you get both. We handle roof replacement and roof repairs on everything from 1950s capes to new shingle-style homes on the North Fork. Architectural asphalt shingles remain the workhorse choice, and we install high-wind rated products with six-nail patterns and sealed starter courses. For homeowners who want a 50-year solution, standing seam metal roofing shrugs off salt air and sheds snow cleanly, while cedar roofing keeps the classic Hamptons and North Shore character that asphalt cannot quite match. Codes, Permits, and Weather: What Exterior Work Requires Here
Exterior work on Long Island is governed by the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and the 2020 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State, administered by your local town building department, whether that is Riverhead, Brookhaven, Smithtown, Huntington, or one of the incorporated villages with their own review boards. What needs a permit depends on scope. Like-for-like window replacement in an existing opening generally does not require one, but enlarging an opening, adding a bay window, or cutting in a new door is structural work that requires a permit, framing inspection, and often an engineered header specification. Reroofing and residing rules vary by town, and we confirm the requirements for your address before work begins.
Wind is the code issue that matters most here. Much of Long Island carries design wind speeds up to 130 mph on the exposed East End and shorefront, which drives shingle fastening schedules, wind-rated product selection, and enhanced connections. State code also requires ice barrier protection: a self-adhering ice-and-water shield membrane at eaves, valleys, and penetrations, which matters on our island because ice dams form fast when a snowstorm is followed by a freeze. We install it as standard practice, not as an upgrade.
The energy code sets maximum U-factors for replacement windows and doors in our climate zone, which is why we quote products that comply rather than bargain units that will not pass inspection or perform in February. Chimney work has its own rules: a flue that serves a relined boiler or a converted heating appliance frequently needs a properly sized chimney liner, and our in-house mechanical crew sizes and coordinates that work instead of leaving it between two contractors.
Finally, inspections. Depending on the project your town may require framing, insulation, and final inspections, closing with a certificate of completion (or an updated certificate of occupancy for structural changes). Open permits and missing certificates surface at the worst possible time, usually when you sell. We close out every job properly so your paperwork matches your house.
